Vision Statements
The SOS Academy exists to glorify God by recruiting and encouraging Kingdom-minded, eternally-focused disciples of Jesus Christ through a one-year urban internship in Memphis, TN.
Summary
The SOS Academy desires to encourage kingdom-minded, eternally-focused disciples of Jesus Christ through a one-year urban internship in Memphis, TN by providing a structured and supervised twelve month discipleship program that includes the following:
Incarnation…
The SOS Academy provides interns the opportunity of “incarnational” ministry by offering housing within the Binghampton neighborhood of Memphis, TN. Jesus Christ’s ministry was incarnational in that He left heaven, became a man and moved into our neighborhood. We offer interns the opportunity to model this within their own lives as they seek to fulfill the greatest commandment to first love God with all of their being and to then love their neighbor as they love themselves. In so doing, we encourage interns to not just be residents of the inner city, but to be “neighbors.”
Theology…
Interns will have weekly assignments and discussions on books such as: Return Flight (Lupton), Let the Nations Be Glad (Piper), Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life (Whitney), A Theology as Big as the City (Bakke), Rich Christians in An Age of Hunger (Sider), The Heavenly Man (Hattaway), and Bruchko (Olson), among others. In addition to this regular reading, interns will take “Perspectives on the World Christian Movement”, an intense study on Biblical, historical, strategic and cultural insights regarding missions.
Application…
Interns will be placed at or among several existing organizations as a means to support the work of God in the city and to provide practical application of their gifts and theology. Such organizations include, but are not limited to: Binghampton Development Corporation (community development), Brinkley Heights Urban Academy (Christian education), Caritas Village (community center), Christ Community Church (inner city church plant), Christ Community Health Services and Ministries (health care and community outreach), EIKON (youth discipleship and recreation), Memphis City Schools (education), Reach Records (music and discipleship), SOS (home repair camps), among others. (For more information regarding specific job descriptions please contact SOS).
All interns will spend March, working with SOS during our spring camps (unless otherwise noted). Also during the months of June and July interns will staff and run SOS114 camps, a new branch of SOS in Orange Mound. In addition, interns will travel with SOS on an international mission trip.
Exposure…
The SOS Academy seeks to provide interns with exposure to Christian families that have strategically chosen to live in the Binghampton neighborhood. The SOS Academy’s greatest asset is the offer of real life examples individuals and families that are living Kingdom-minded, eternally-focused lives in Binghampton. Through mentoring relationships, being neighbors, planned events, opportunities within a neighborhood house church plant, and the desire and openness of these families, interns will interact with these families on a personal level…gaining a “cloud of witnesses” to show the way!
